Frequently Asked Questions

Many job seekers believe they are writing their resume just for the decision maker: the person who understands what they have done, can draw conclusions, and is likely to read the entire resume.

In reality, every resume must be able to survive three distinct audiences (if you insist on the standard method of job searching; there are, of course, better ways):

The Robots: Generally resume databases and ATS systems that scan your resume for keywords.  If you haven’t tailored your resume just right, using correct terminology and ensuring you have all the relevant keywords for the job’s requirements, your resume won’t even be seen by a human being.

Human Resources: Imagine searching through piles of perhaps hundreds or even thousands of resumes for a job opening, most of which are completely irrelevant.  And imagine doing this with only a rough description provided to you, for a job you otherwise know very little about.  This is what is happening when your resume goes to HR.  Getting through that minefield is all about standing out so that the 10-15 seconds they give your resume is all that’s needed to put you in the keeper pile.

The Hiring Manager: Now your resume has finally reached someone who might even be your immediate boss, who knows what the role really needs and has had the stack of resumes reduced so that perhaps a little more time may be spent reviewing yours in particular.  If you don’t impress here, there won’t even be an interview. 

So with each party analyzing your resume from a different perspective, you have to make sure your resume is easily readable, keyword rich, appealing, eye-grabbing, and powerful to each of those audiences.   That’s where we can help. (services)

A professionally written resume is an investment: pure and simple.  If you realize how many people will see it, how frequently it will be the first impression you make with hiring managers, you will quickly realize that it is worth the money.  Would you rather submit several dozen job applications before realizing that your resume is an integral reason for lack of response?

Speaking further on the investment piece, for a professional with a yearly salary of $75,000, every week out of work is an opportunity cost/loss of roughly $1,445 dollars in income. If a better resume could even decrease your search by one week, wouldn’t it be worth the investment? We base our fees on a number of factors, including your career level. For example, a resume for an executive with over 30 years of experience is more complex and will take longer to prepare than a resume for a new graduate; therefore, the fees will be higher for the executive resume.

  • Students, recent College Grads, or those with less than two years experience.
  • Target salaries ranging from $20,000-$50,000 annually.
  • Examples: College Student, Graduate Student, Intern, Auditor, Accountant, Clerical Worker, Analyst, Bookkeeper, Attorney, Sales Representative, and Unskilled Labor/Production positions.
  • Entry Level resumes are almost always one page in length.

Professional Level:

  • 2-8 years of experience. 
  • May have supervisory or team leader experience.
  • Target salaries ranging from $50,000 to $80,000 annually.
  • Examples: Senior Accountant, Senior Auditor, Senior Analyst, Trader, Medical Professional, Nurse (RNs, LPNs), and K-12 Teacher with a 4 year degree. (Teachers with Masters degrees, University Professors or Doctorates may require a CV – see below. Education Administrators are Mid-Level Management.).
  • Professional-level resumes are usually two pages in length.

Executive/Senior-Level Management:

  • 15-30+ years of experience.
  • Target salaries ranging from $150,000 to $900,000+ annually.
  • Oversees Mid-Level Management and multiple departments. May manage multiple facilities. May manage national or global operations.
  • Manages budgets and has P&L accountability.
  • Examples: All Senior Executives, from Director-Level to C-Level, including CEO, CFO, CIO, COO, Vice President, General Manager, Director of (Department), etc.
  • Executive Resumes are usually two to three pages long, but occasionally a client will require additional pages. Some Executive resumes include a separate addendum with additional details.

Q. Do I need a CV or a Resume?

CV’s are very similar to resumes, but they are longer and much more detailed. The length of a CV can run three to five pages. You may need a CV in the following situations:

  • If you are applying for a position outside the U.S.
  • If you are a physician or scientist.
  • If you are in the academic field…a university Professor, for example.
